Every engineering leader eventually faces it: the ‘Big Rewrite’. It’s that daunting, often multi-year undertaking to replace mission-critical legacy infrastructure with something modern, scalable, and resilient. The stakes are always incredibly high – system downtime, data integrity issues, budget overruns, and team morale are just a few of the potential pitfalls.

I know this challenge intimately because nearly a decade ago, I was on the other side of the table. As the Enterprise Messaging Lead at Deutsche Bank, I spearheaded the firm-wide migration from TIBCO Rendezvous to Solace. It was an ambitious project, transforming the very nervous system of a global financial institution. Now, as the VP of Systems Engineering at Solace, I see similar challenges and opportunities daily with our customers. My journey, first as a user and now as a leader at Solace, has given me a unique perspective on what it takes to navigate such a monumental shift successfully.

The TCO of maintaining complex, bespoke integrations on systems like TIBCO Rendezvous was becoming unsustainable for a bank of Deutsche Bank’s scale.
  • Scalability Limits: Modern financial markets demand real-time, high-volume transaction processing that legacy architectures struggle to keep up with. Point-to-point integrations common in older systems become bottlenecks as data flows multiply.
  • Rigidity and Complexity: Adapting legacy systems to new business requirements or regulatory changes often requires significant effort, introduces risk, and slows down innovation. The architecture often became a tangled web of dependencies, making even minor changes a major project.
  • Operational Burden: Monitoring, troubleshooting, and ensuring high availability for disparate, aging systems can consume an inordinate amount of engineering resources.

At Deutsche Bank, we needed an architecture that could gracefully handle the explosion of real-time data and transactions, provide ultra-low latency, and reduce the operational complexity that was hindering our agility. The shift towards an Event-Driven Architecture (EDA) with Solace was not just a technology upgrade; it was a strategic imperative.

Planning the Unthinkable: Strategy Overhaul

A ‘Big Rewrite’ is more than just a technical swap; it’s a strategic organizational transformation. Our approach focused on several key pillars:

My experience working with KDB+ and optimizing for nanosecond latencies meant I had a very high bar for our new messaging backbone. This foundational change was what truly enabled us to modernize and scale.

The unified management plane, comprehensive monitoring tools, and predictable behavior of Solace significantly streamlined our operations. Debugging, capacity planning, and system upgrades became far less cumbersome compared to managing the distributed and often opaque nature of our legacy TIBCO environment. This wasn’t just about saving money; it was about freeing up valuable engineering time to focus on innovation.

The lessons I learned about scaling and skilling up teams, whether it was managing a new team building microservices in GoLang and Java Spring Boot at Capital One or expanding Solace’s pre-sales engineering team from 5 to 15, all stem from this fundamental understanding of people.

Today, as VP of Systems Engineering at Solace, leading the go-to-market strategy for our brand new Agentic AI solution, Solace Agent Mesh, these lessons resonate more than ever. The principles of robust, real-time eventing, low-latency communication, and resilient architecture are fundamental to building scalable, intelligent agentic systems. Understanding the market landscape, analyzing competitors, figuring out product-market fit, and scaling/skilling up my team for cutting-edge AI technology requires the same strategic foresight and adaptability we applied during the TIBCO migration.

My time architecting high-performance microservices in GoLang at Capital One showed me how foundational a strong messaging layer is for modern distributed systems. Whether you’re migrating from legacy systems, embracing cloud-native architectures, or building the next generation of AI-driven applications, the core tenets of Event-Driven Architecture remain critical for success.
